Tonight we are in Medford Oregon after a day of driving... literally, a day of driving. We started out at 8 am and apart from a quick lunch break and toilet stop, we drove continuously. Before we left everyone told us how vast the distances were but we just thought we'd be right, it wouldn't turn out to be that far, but it really is!!
And, California is a state of contrasts. This morning it was 12 degrees celsius when we left Carmel and steadily climbed to finish at 32 degrees when we pulled up tonight. We drove through sand dunes at Monterey, which turned into blacksoil farming land, cities (Sacramento) with tall buildings immediately beside wasteland, arid desert like hills which gave way to the amazing and beautiful Mt Shasta National Park. We arrived in Medford, which was our goal for today, at about 6:30 p.m. with the sun high in the sky and heat baking the car park of the hotel. The kids immediately changed into togs and jumped in the pool while Bruce cleaned out the car. During this job, he found himself involved in a Jerry Springer style domestic dispute! A woman on the second floor, fighting with her partner, threw a plastic bag full of his stuff over the balcony, landing squarely on the roof of our car. Unfortunately the bag had a can of deoderant in it, which dented the car, so Bruce left it there and went along to the office to let them know. They came back with him, saw the bag still there and called the guy down from the room. He collected his gear, management went to speak to the woman and about ten minutes later we had a call to say the police were on their way and the couple had been evicted. Drama! Anyway, we had a Medford City Police Officer in our room, taking Bruce's statement and the woman agreed to pay all damages etc. We were going for dinner as they were driving out (the fighting couple) and she went in to the office to check out and he drove away!!! Poor thing came out of the Office looking around everywhere for him.... don't know how it ended up.
Our most interesting stop today was in Weed California. Thomas weed in Weed.... think we might have a tshirt made! It's a pretty place right at the foot of Mt Shasta.
Dinner tonight was at The Black Bear Diner, very cheap meal and SO MUCH FOOD! It is only a wonder that people aren't much bigger here. The food they try to pile on to your plates is incredible!
Yesterday we stopped at Denny's, really just for a drink and the waitress talked us into an "appetiser" of deep fried donut balls, with cream cheese and strawberry filling. She then expected us to order meals, after that as an appetiser!!!
Anyway, Ellen wants her computer. Big drive again tomorrow- Port Angeles tomorrow night and the ferry on Saturday morning. It's 9:10 p.m. and still light outside... we are having a really great holiday, with lots of family time :) love to everyone!
